Frequently asked questions
How much space should be between gallery wall frames?▾
For most gallery walls, keep an even 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) between frames. Tighter spacing (1.5–2 in) reads as one cohesive piece; wider spacing (3–4 in) feels more relaxed. The key is to keep the gap consistent on every side. Set your gap in the planner above to see the exact total size it produces.
How do I plan a gallery wall layout?▾
Start with the wall width you have to work with, decide how many frames you want, and pick a frame size. The planner arranges them into a balanced grid that fits your wall, then gives you the total footprint, the spacing, and the height to hang it. Map it out on the floor or with paper templates before putting holes in the wall.
What height should a gallery wall be hung at?▾
Center the whole grouping at about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor — average eye level — so the arrangement reads as a single unit. Above a sofa or console, leave roughly 6–10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom row of frames.
How wide should a gallery wall be relative to the wall or furniture below it?▾
A common guideline is for the arrangement to span about 60–75% of the furniture width below it (for example, a sofa). On an open wall, leave a comfortable margin on each side rather than running frames to the edges. The planner shows the clearance you'll have on each side for your inputs.
Can I mix different frame sizes in a gallery wall?▾
Yes — mixed-size salon-style gallery walls are popular. This planner assumes equal-sized frames in a balanced grid for clean, predictable spacing. For mixed sizes, use the grid result as your overall footprint, then arrange varied frames inside that footprint visually in the WallMockup editor.
How many frames should I use for a gallery wall?▾
It depends on your wall width and frame size. Even numbers (4, 6, 8) arrange neatly into grids, while odd numbers can work in rows or salon-style clusters. Try different counts in the planner — it automatically picks a balanced grid that fits the wall you entered.
