To sell printable wall art on Etsy, you export one high-resolution file for each aspect ratio you want to cover, list it as an instant download, and lead the listing with a room mockup that makes clear the buyer gets a file, not a framed print. The two numbers that shape everything else come from Etsy itself: a digital listing holds up to five files, and each file can be at most 20 MB.

One rule surprises most new sellers: Etsy doesn't allow variations on digital items. You can't offer "8x10" and "16x20" as options the way you can on a physical print. Every size the buyer might want has to be inside the same five files.

The short answer

  1. Make one master file at the largest size you'll support, at 300 DPI. For a 24x36 inch print that is 7200 x 10800 pixels.
  2. Export five ratio files from it: 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11:14 and ISO A. Together they cover 21 standard print sizes.
  3. Check that each file is under 20 MB and has a name the buyer will understand. Etsy shows buyers the file names, and you can't rename a file after uploading it.
  4. Create the listing as a digital item with instant download, and upload the five files.
  5. Lead with a room mockup at true scale, then show the file list and what's included.
  6. Set the price after fees: a $0.20 listing fee every four months and a 6.5% transaction fee, plus payment processing.

What Etsy allows for digital listings

These rules come from Etsy's help article How to Manage Your Digital Listings, read on October 20, 2026.

RuleWhat it means for printable wall art
Up to 5 files per instant downloadFive ratio files is the natural fit. Extra formats (a PDF guide, a PNG copy) take a slot each.
20 MB maximum per fileLarge, detailed files can go over. The size pack maker flags any file above 20 MB before you upload.
File names up to 70 characters, no renaming laterName files by ratio and size range before upload, for example sunset_2x3_4x6-to-24x36.jpg.
No variations for digital itemsOne listing must cover every size. You can't sell sizes as separate options.
Made-to-order digital listingsYou upload the files after the order, for custom work. Same five-file, 20 MB limit.
Items must be made or designed by youEtsy's handmade rule applies to digital files too.

Etsy's seller handbook article on digital downloads adds two practical points. Say clearly in the photos, title and tags that the item is a download, because buyers who think they're getting a framed print turn into refunds and messages. And expect questions about printing, so include printing instructions with the files.

Which five files cover which sizes

Standard print sizes fall into a few aspect ratios: 8x10 and 16x20 are both 4:5, 12x18 and 24x36 are both 2:3. A file made for the largest size of a ratio prints sharply at every smaller size in that ratio, so five files do the work of twenty-one.

Five Etsy printable files, one per aspect ratio, and the 21 print sizes they cover

These figures come from running a 7200 x 10800 px master through the free printable size pack maker. The DPI column is the lowest DPI in each family, at its largest size.

FilePixel sizePrint sizes it coversLowest DPI
2:37200 x 108004x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36 in300
3:45400 x 72006x8, 9x12, 12x16, 15x20, 18x24 in300
4:54800 x 60004x5, 8x10, 12x15, 16x20 in300
11:143300 x 420011x14 in300
ISO A7017 x 9933A5, A4, A3, A2, A1300

The 11:14 file covers a single size, which can look like a wasted slot. 11x14 is a standard frame size on our frame size chart, though, and it doesn't share a ratio with 8x10. Without its own file, a buyer with an 11x14 frame has to crop the art themselves.

A smaller master still works, with a trade-off at the top end. From a 4800 x 7200 px source, the tool reports 200 DPI for 24x36 and 205 DPI for A1. That's still in the tool's "great" band, which starts at 200 DPI; "excellent" starts at 300. If you want to check one file against one size, use the print resolution checker.

Crop each ratio by hand

The size pack maker crops each ratio from the center. That's fine for abstract work, but it can clip a signature or the edge of a figure. For art with important edges, check each crop, or compose the art with a safe margin so that every ratio keeps what matters.

Add a sizes file

Buyers don't think in ratios. They think "I have an 8x10 frame". The size pack maker writes a sizes.txt into the ZIP that lists which sizes each file prints. Put the same list in your listing description. Etsy also lets you write one shop-wide note that buyers see on their Downloads page, which is a good place for printing instructions.

Listing photos for a file you can't hold

A buyer can't check paper quality or frame finish on a file, so they judge the listing on photos and the file list. The photo order for physical prints works here too, with one change: one photo states plainly what's in the download.

  1. Room hero. A landscape room photo with the print at a real size. This is the thumbnail. Etsy recommends listing photos at 2000 px or more, and the Etsy listing photo size checker tests any file against Etsy's limits.
  2. Close-up. The artwork alone, so buyers can see the detail they're paying for.
  3. Size reference. The same art at two sizes in the same room, so "16x20" means something.
  4. What's included. A simple graphic listing the five files, the sizes, "digital download" and "no physical item shipped". Etsy's handbook gives an example of a seller who added a banner to the photo saying the product is a printable.
  5. Alternate room or frame. A second style for buyers who don't live in the first one.

For the reasoning behind each slot, see how many photos an Etsy wall art listing needs. The room photos are the slow part. One upload in the Bulk Generator renders up to 60 room and frame combinations at once, and the guide to Etsy mockups for wall art maps each mockup to a slot.

Pricing a printable after Etsy's fees

Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy (last updated October 5, 2026) sets the fees that apply to a printable sold on Etsy.com:

FeeAmountWhen it applies
Listing fee$0.20Each listing, renewed every four months
Transaction fee6.5%Of the item price on every sale
Payment processingVaries by countrySet in Etsy's Payments Policy for your bank's location
Offsite Ads15%, or 12% for shops with $10,000+ in yearly salesOnly on orders that come from Etsy's offsite ads

The handbook's own advice on pricing is to start from what you'd charge for a printed and shipped version, then account for your design time and Etsy's fees. Support is the cost that's easy to forget. A seller quoted in Etsy's handbook says she spends a lot of time helping people remotely, and another says many buyers don't know how to open a PDF or change printer settings. The same article reports that one seller "dramatically cut down" confused buyers by adding a photo that shows the pattern itself. For wall art, the equivalent is the what's-included photo and a sizes list.

Etsy's new print option for digital buyers

Etsy is testing a way for buyers to turn eligible digital purchases into printed items. According to Etsy's help article for sellers, read on October 20, 2026:

  • After buying an eligible file, the buyer may see an option to order a print through a separate checkout.
  • The print is sold and fulfilled by a third-party provider, Ventur Editions, from its own shop, with its own listing and reviews.
  • Listings may be included automatically if your shop is in the US or Canada, you don't already sell a physical version or use your own print-on-demand integration, and the file meets the print partner's quality requirements.
  • You can opt out for the whole shop under Shop Manager, Settings, Options, "Allow buyers to purchase digital prints".

If your shop is eligible, your files may be judged by a print partner as well as by the buyer's home printer, so the 300 DPI target matters more. And if you plan to sell physical prints of the same design, decide early: per the eligibility rule above, offering your own physical version keeps that listing out of the test.

Key Takeaways

  • Etsy digital listings take up to five files of up to 20 MB each, and digital items can't have variations.
  • Five ratio files (2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11:14, ISO A) from one 7200 x 10800 px master cover 21 print sizes at 300 DPI or more.
  • Name files clearly before upload, because buyers see the names and you can't change them.
  • Lead with a true-scale room mockup, and spend one photo saying exactly what the download contains.
  • Etsy is testing a print option for digital buyers in the US and Canada. Sellers can opt out.

FAQ

How many files can you upload to an Etsy digital listing?

Up to five files for an instant download, each up to 20 MB. Made-to-order digital listings have the same limit when you upload the finished files. For printable wall art, five files is enough for one file per common aspect ratio.

What size should printable wall art files be for Etsy?

Make each file at the largest print size of its ratio at 300 DPI, for example 7200 x 10800 pixels for a 24x36 inch print in the 2:3 ratio. That one file prints sharply at every smaller 2:3 size. Keep each file under Etsy's 20 MB limit.

Can you sell different sizes as variations on an Etsy digital listing?

No. Etsy doesn't allow variations on digital items. Put every size into the same listing by including one file per aspect ratio, and list the sizes each file covers in the description.

Is it worth selling digital prints on Etsy?

It can be, because there's no printing or shipping and one design can sell many times. The costs are the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing, your design time, and buyer support. Etsy's handbook says digital buyers often need help with downloading and printing.

Make the listing photos next

Once the five files are ready, the listing still needs photos that show the art at a real size in a real room. Start with the art mockup generator, or read how to sell art on Etsy for niche, sizing and pricing beyond printables.
