An 11x14 print is about the size of a large hardcover book, and above a sofa it looks small. A 24x36 is the smallest single print that holds its own over most sofas. Numbers on a size chart don't tell you that, so we put seven common sizes on the same wall, above the same sofa, at true scale.
Every image below uses the same room and the same artwork. Only the print size changes. Each print sits in a 1-inch black frame with its bottom edge 8 inches above the sofa back, which is roughly where you would hang it at home.

Wall art sizes at a glance
The framed size assumes a 1-inch frame and no mat. A mat adds its border width on every side, so a 2-inch mat makes each framed size another 4 inches wider and taller.
| Print size | Centimeters | Framed, 1-inch frame | Where it usually works |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8x10 in | 20.3 x 25.4 cm | 10 x 12 in | Desk, shelf, nightstand, one slot in a gallery wall |
| 11x14 in | 27.9 x 35.6 cm | 13 x 16 in | Beside a doorway, narrow wall, pairs |
| 16x20 in | 40.6 x 50.8 cm | 18 x 22 in | Bedroom wall, above a dresser |
| 18x24 in | 45.7 x 61 cm | 20 x 26 in | Entryway, above a nightstand, small living room |
| 24x36 in | 61 x 91.4 cm | 26 x 38 in | Above a sofa or bed |
| 30x40 in | 76.2 x 101.6 cm | 32 x 42 in | Statement wall, long sofa, headboard wall |
| 40x60 in | 101.6 x 152.4 cm | 42 x 62 in | Large walls, high ceilings, open-plan rooms |
8x10: a desk or gallery-wall size

Framed, an 8x10 is about 10 x 12 inches, a little bigger than a sheet of letter paper. Alone above a sofa it reads as an accident. It belongs where people stand close to it: on a desk, leaning on a shelf, above a nightstand, or as one piece in a gallery wall. It is also the size buyers order as a gift, which is a good reason for sellers to offer it even if it never hangs over a sofa.
11x14: small, but framable

This is the size people mean when they search "how big is 11x14 on a wall." With a slim frame it is about 13 x 16 inches. That suits a narrow strip of wall beside a door, a bathroom, or a pair hung side by side. It is still small over furniture.
One thing catches buyers out: many "11x14 frames" come with a mat cut for an 8x10 print. The outside of the frame stays about 13 x 16 inches, but the visible art shrinks to roughly 7.5 x 9.5. If you sell 11x14 prints, say whether the size refers to the print or to the frame.
16x20: the bedroom-wall size

At 18 x 22 inches framed, a 16x20 has enough presence for a bedroom wall, above a dresser, or over a reading chair. Over a sofa it starts to look intentional but still light. Two 16x20s side by side, about 3 inches apart, cover close to 40 inches and work over a loveseat.
18x24: the entryway and nightstand size

18x24 is a common poster size and a comfortable single piece for an entryway, a hallway, or a small living room. It is 3:4, not 2:3, so artwork made for 24x36 won't fit without a crop or a border. That ratio mismatch is the size complaint sellers hear most, so check it before you list both sizes from one file.
24x36: where a single print starts to work over a sofa

Framed at about 26 x 38 inches, a portrait 24x36 is as tall as a kitchen counter is high. This is the first size in the series that can hang alone over a sofa without looking lost, though over a long sectional like this one it still covers well under the two thirds of the sofa width most designers aim for. A pair of 24x36 prints, or one in landscape, gets you closer.
30x40: a statement piece

30x40 is where a print becomes the focal point of the room. It suits a long sofa, the wall behind a bed, or a dining room. It also gets expensive to frame and ship, so if you sell it, show it in a room like this so buyers know what they are committing to before checkout.
40x60: oversized

At 42 x 62 inches framed, a portrait 40x60 hung 8 inches above this sofa nearly reaches the ceiling cove. It wants a tall wall, an open-plan room, or landscape orientation. Most frame shops treat it as custom work, and many sellers offer it as a canvas rather than a framed print.
11x14 vs 12x18
The two get compared a lot because they are close in area and both get called "small." They are not interchangeable. 11x14 is roughly 4:5 (close to the 8x10 family), and 12x18 is 2:3 (the 24x36 family). Put the same artwork in both and one of them will need a crop or a border. 12x18 is also 4 inches taller, which shows on a wall: it reads as a slim poster, while 11x14 reads as a framed print. The aspect ratio calculator tells you which family your file belongs to.
Three rules that settle most size questions
- Cover about two thirds of the furniture. Art over a sofa, bed, or console looks right at roughly 60% to 75% of the furniture width. An 84-inch sofa wants about 50 to 60 inches of art, which is one oversized piece or two 24x36 prints, not one 18x24.
- Leave 6 to 10 inches above the furniture. Closer than that and the art feels pinned to the sofa; much higher and it floats away from it.
- On an open wall, center at about 57 inches. That is average eye level, and the reference most galleries use. The how to hang wall art guide has the nail-height formula for wire-hung frames.
If you are working from your own furniture, the wall art size calculator does the two-thirds math for you, and the wall art size comparison tool shows several sizes side by side.
How these images were made
Each room in WallMockup's catalog is measured: this one is 149.5 inches wide at the wall, which works out to about 19.3 image pixels per inch. We placed the same artwork at each size using that scale, with a 1-inch frame and the bottom edge 8 inches above the sofa back. The artwork is a garden painting already used on our site, cropped to each print's ratio.
That is also how the art mockup generator works. You enter the size you actually sell and the room shows it at that size, so an 8x10 looks like an 8x10 instead of a poster. If you sell prints, that one image answers the question buyers ask most: "how big is it, really?"

FAQ
How big is an 11x14 print on a wall?
An 11x14 print is 27.9 x 35.6 cm. In a slim 1-inch frame it is about 13 x 16 inches on the wall, roughly the size of a large hardcover book. It works beside a doorway, on a narrow wall, or as a pair, and looks small on its own above a sofa.
Is 16x20 big enough for above a sofa?
Usually not on its own. A framed 16x20 is about 18 x 22 inches, while a typical 84-inch sofa wants 50 to 60 inches of art. Hang two side by side over a loveseat, or step up to 24x36 or larger for a full-size sofa.
What size wall art goes above a queen bed?
A queen bed is about 60 inches wide, so aim for roughly 40 to 45 inches of art: one 30x40 in landscape, or two 18x24 prints hung about 3 inches apart.
Is 24x36 too big for a bedroom?
Not for the wall behind a bed, where it usually looks right. On a narrow bedroom wall or above a small dresser it can crowd the space; 16x20 or 18x24 is often the better fit there.
What is the most popular wall art size?
There is no official ranking, but 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24, and 24x36 are the sizes most frame makers stock and most print shops offer, which is why they dominate listings.
